2. Too Much Alcohol

It’s easy to overlook the impact of alcohol on your body weight. A glass of wine here, a beer there it all seems harmless enough. But the reality is, those calories add up quickly. Alcohol is notoriously high in empty calories, which provide no nutritional benefit but can significantly contribute to gaining fat.

For example, just one beer packs around 158 calories, and half a glass of wine clocks in at about 140. If you’re indulging regularly, these drinks can quietly sabotage your efforts to maintain or lose weight. Taking a closer look at your drinking habits and making a conscious effort to cut back can make a big difference. Sometimes, even small changes can have a significant impact on your overall body weight.

3. Thyroid Trouble

Your thyroid might be small, but it plays a big role in managing your body weight. When your thyroid isn’t functioning properly—particularly if you have an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism—it can slow down your metabolism. This slowdown makes it easier for you to gain fat, even if your diet and exercise routine haven’t changed.

If you’re feeling more tired than usual, struggling with feelings of coldness, or just can’t shake that sluggish feeling, it might be worth getting your thyroid checked. Hypothyroidism is more common than you might think, and it’s often a silent contributor to weight gain. 4. Stress and Sleep

Stress is an unavoidable part of life, but when it becomes chronic, it can wreak havoc on your body weight. Certain medications, including antidepressants, steroids, and even some types of birth control, are known to have side effects that include gaining fat. The excess cortisol leads to weight gain, particularly around your face, neck, and waist, giving a distinctive appearance that’s hard to ignore.
